Carly Faber

Carly Faber is a Boston-based illustrator, educator, and jeweler. She received a BFA in Illustration and Art Education, with a minor in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in the Winter of 2021. As an illustrator, Carly enjoys using a wide range of materials (i.e. gouache, inks, markers, colored pencils, etc.) to make conceptual and narrative work. Often inspired by her own experiences as a queer woman raised in an intolerant Catholic church, she is inspired to draw from mythologies and biblical stories to explore the way women and minorities are depicted and treated in these contexts. When not drawing Carly trades her pencils in for a saw and torchworking with Silver, copper, and brass to make elegant and unique pieces of jewelry. Inspired by natural textures and semi-precious gemstones her work juxtaposes the hand of man with the touch of nature.

Statement

“This series is a deconstruction of beauty standards. Women often feel like they must contort themselves in order to fit rigid beauty standards. They may alter their appearance or even harm their body in order to do so. In these paintings, the women have fit themselves into 5 strictly laid out shapes. However, they appear content and embrace themselves in an act of self-love. They represent a diverse group, in both appearance and body type, showing the way everyone is beautiful in their own individuality. The series is done in shades of pink and red for both its association with femininity as well as love.”
