Clover Powell is an illustrator based in the Boston area. Born in Antony, Hauts-de-Seine in France but growing up in Tucson, Arizona, drawing was how he made sense of the world around him.
Statement
Powell grew up on French comic books like Asterix and Obelix, transitioned into adolescence with American comics like Spiderman, and journeyed into young adulthood reading Japanese manga like Bleach and Naruto. Clover earned his BA at Williams College, graduating with honors in 2016. During his college years, he would take part in Berkshire Art Association Fellowship Show in 2015 and 2016, winning prizes in both. He took part in the installation of a Sol Lewitt painting at the Williams College Museum of Art in 2015. All this experience would culminate in his participation in the Seen Yr Show, a thesis show in 2016 set up by the Honors art students at Williams College. Clover’s work is filled to the brim with mark making. There are piles of broken things and trash that fill vast areas. His trademark character, the goat, traverses these landscapes, exploring these desolate places, escaping mysterious danger and appreciating small moments of beauty. He seeks to make sense of the society he grew up in, both loving and fearing it all at the same time. He is always asking himself where the individual places themselves with regard to the forces of society.
