This exhibition presents the work of 20 New England-based artists whose art engages and subverts the still life genre. Using painting, drawing, photography, video, sculpture, multimedia, and digital rendering, the featured artists engage with contemplations of the past and the future, depicted through objects. objectivity is juried by artist Josephine Halvorson.

The objects in Summer Snack at Palmetto’s by Danielle Fretwell are presented at a one-to-one scale, suggesting a reliance on the viewer’s personal experience with these objects to share a bodily relationship with the work. Mike Howat’s piece, Racing Thoughts and Satellites, was inspired by long walks Howat took around his neighborhood. This window painting is an assembled collage of still life, memory, image fragments, and meaningful places. Charles Hickey’s Maps Moves Melons pairs the painting surface with the digital surface to explore the way we think about objects and space through 2D representation. About the Juror

Josephine Halvorson makes art that foregrounds firsthand experience and takes the form of painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Born in Brewster, Massachusetts, she studied at The Cooper Union, Yale Norfolk, and Columbia University. In 2021, she was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Halvorson is the recipient of major international residencies and fellowships: The US Fulbright to Vienna, Austria, the Harriet Hale Woolley at the Fondation des États-Unis in Paris, France, and was the first American pensionnaire at the French Academy in Rome at the Villa Medici. Her work has been exhibited internationally, selected exhibitions include SECCA, Storm King Art Center, the ICA Boston Foster Prize Exhibition, and the Havana Biennial in 2019. Currently she has a solo exhibition at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, NM. She is Professor of Art and Chair of Graduate Studies in Painting at Boston University.
