The 11th Annual Members’ Exhibition is a group exhibition featuring Gallery 263’s Artist Members. The Artist Membership Program is comprised of regional artists representing a range of career levels—from emerging to established—who work in a variety of mediums. This year’s exhibition presents sculpture, painting, drawing, textiles, photography, and ceramics.
Susan Emmerson’s work considers the emotional and physical devastation created by the loss of home. “Home is where our most basic human needs – nourishment, rest and safety – are supposed to be met. When these are lost we are set adrift, grieving for security and permanence.” Similarly, Carolyn Sirois works in the aesthetics of ruins; she manipulates materials like cement, paper, graphite, ink, and wax to reflect on time.
Anya Leveille makes work that is sensory; the artist’s process includes slow layering combined with aggressive archeology, such as cutting, digging, and scratching. Subtle movements, ephemeral layering of color, and expressive textures evoke the spiritual awakening in body and mind that are the essence of revelation and discovery. Some of the members have been with the gallery since the program’s inception; others have enriched the program with new perspectives.
