The work on view in this exhibition was made by artist in residence Mike Howat. During his time as the 2022 Gallery 263 artist in residence over the course of six weeks this summer. During his residency, the artist created large-scale acrylic paintings, cardboard sculptures, and aerial drawings inspired by apartment buildings and other architecture in the neighborhoods surrounding the gallery. In this solo showcase, Howat explores ideas of collective memory and how we leave our mark on the places and communities we exist in.

About the Artist

Mike Howat is a New Hampshire-based painter and educator. His work explores themes of urbanization, Americana, and collective memory. Since earning his B.F.A. from New Hampshire Institute of Art in 2014, he has been actively engaged in the growing New England art scene. He exhibits regionally and nationally. He showed regularly with Kelley Stelling Contemporary and Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden and has shown with Chase’s Garage, Rochester Museum of Fine Arts, Nahcotta, Talon Gallery (PDX), Carrie Secrist Gallery (Chicago), and Nucleus Portland, among others.
