sair götz (they/them) approaches word & art smithing as embodied spell-casting. They believe that through honed language, fantastical channeling, typographic rituals, and sweaty sports, they can compost trash timelines into nourishing futures. They are a technological dumpster diver, finding divine inspiration in obsolete innovations in fields such as silent film, letterpress illustration, and lemon husbandry. These playful and devotional endeavors manifest in all time- and test-based media: video, books, essays, performances, music, software, and signage. Conversations about drag, legibility, and vocal expression are sure to quicken their heart.
sair received their MFA from the Ohio State University in 2017 and their BA in Visual and Media Studies, Arts of the Moving Image, and Documentary Studies from Duke University in 2011. In 2017-2018 sair was awarded the Dedalus Foundation post-MFA fellowship. sair has shown their work and has completed several residencies across North America & Europe. sair’s studio is in Boston, Massachusetts.
Artist statement
Break Your Voice Off explores the relationship of gender-non-binaries and voice through the lens of ventriloquism. Each is created from recombined pages of my 2019 artist book Break Your Voice. If the book was like a music album, each of these works is like a remixed hook or melody that got stuck in my head. They blend three voices: decontextualized handwritten lists, quotes from a monograph on ventriloquism, and typeset original text. The original text is printed on sticky notes that follow a color code which helps contextualize the words:
Orange: Actions / Instructions Green: anything that can be material or listed Blue: quotes or references to external media which was loud in the ear.
