Artist statement
I am an attentive observer. My artistic practice is a means for exploring my relationship with place and time. I paint en plein air and in my studio, layering colors, marks, and materials to describe scenes and sensations I see and feel when I’m outside. I work from direct observation and revel in the joy of material exploration. I like to stand at a distance—from a wide angle—and take it all in… the vast ocean, water shimmering against the surface as waves crash against the shore, clouds heavy in the sky overhead, the stability of tree trunks—their outstretched branches, filtered light glinting through the leaves, the space between…
My paintings celebrate novelty within natural cycles. I challenge myself to paint at different times of day and during different seasons in order to experience a range of atmospheric conditions and color relationships. I often work in series, surveying the landscape again and again with the intention of deepening my connection to the places I’m painting. Intrigued by the subtle, and sometimes dramatic, variations that present themselves when I spend time responding to a sight over an extended period of time, I allow information to become layered and complex.
