Artist statement
My work focuses on the humor and joy found in everyday life. As a cartoonist, I use comics and prints as a vehicle for humor, vulnerability and connection. Being able to share stories and pass them along in physical form is important to me, as I began my artistic career as an animator, which allowed for very little physicality to my work. Handcrafting my comics, books and prints allows me to embrace the beauty in imperfection, something I also find is my aim with risograph printing. It also captures the essence of something hand crafted, which adds an element of preciousness and genuine connection between the viewer and the work.
Creating zines, comics, and prints with bright colors, wiggly lines, and relatable messaging is all part of my work’s focus on creating connection with the viewer. I believe that creating art for yourself is a radical act, and one anyone can partake in. Whether I’m teaching drawing or organizing a large-scale independent comics expo, I see cartooning as a communal act—and through it I aim to inspire my friends and community, regardless of skill level, to partake in the joy of creating.
