Gallery 263 is thrilled to present Ripples in Still Water, an Exhibition Proposal Series show that examines the human impact of substance use disorder through intimate profiles and semi-documentary photography. Composed of portraits made by Hannah Latham for Studio B, these photographic works position rural Maine as a microcosm of a national crisis, where isolation can be deadly, and community can be sustaining.

Together, the stories form a mosaic that extends beyond the condition itself, tracing the forces that shape these lives, including trauma, childhood sexual assault, poverty, and isolation, as well as the forms of care that sustain them: acts of kindness, safe community spaces, and the protection of children. The photographs are often made in places of personal significance and are developed through a collaborative process rooted in trust and mutual respect. Some participants remain anonymous; others meet the viewer’s gaze directly. Environmental images deepen each narrative, situating each person’s experience within the physical and emotional terrain of daily life.

Taken together, these voices and images invite viewers to look beyond statistics and headlines to the lives they contain. The work seeks to challenge stigma, raise awareness, and spark conversation, making room for both empathy and outrage, and calling for a more compassionate response to those most at risk.
