Gallery 263 is pleased to announce STORYLINES, a regional juried exhibition. This show presents the work of twenty-nine artists who explore overlooked narratives through their work in photography, painting, drawing, mixed media, monotype, collage, and sculpture. STORYLINES is juried by James Everett Stanley, an artist and an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The featured artists in STORYLINES explore the theme by presenting viewers with carefully constructed stories or by decontextualizing imagery to encourage viewers to imagine the narrative.

Gunnar Norquist, inspired by collective memory, contemplates the physical and psychological impacts of a historical event in an intimate and meticulously rendered drawing titled Mount Saint Helens. Katrina Ellis, whose mixed media work Within Sights, Beyond Grasp is on view, is influenced by the human tendency to view life through narratives. Mason Tepper creates a narrative of ego, which the artist attempts to enliven through themes of comedy, amour-propre, camp, and their inherent queernesses, in Untitled #2, a painting made with oil, glitter, and beads. Other artists, such as Monica Srivastava and Mai-Han Nguyen, utilize portraiture to examine identity. Although the artists in STORYLINES highlight overlooked narratives through different mediums and content, they ultimately make work about what binds us: the human experience.

About the Juror

James Everett Stanley received his MFA in painting from Columbia University. His work has been shown widely, including solo and group exhibitions at Freight & Volume Gallery in New York, Kinkead Contemporary in Los Angeles, Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago, and Frederic Snitzer Gallery in Miami. Stanley is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was awarded a Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program fellowship and a fellowship from The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. His work was recently included in local exhibitions at Mills Gallery; Boston Center for the Arts; Gaa Gallery, Provincetown, MA; the Cape Cod Museum of Art; and the Bristol Art Museum, Bristol, RI. He is an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
