Surface Consumption is an Exhibition Proposal Series exhibition by Lisa Kellner. Kellner’s work explores the conditions of space while considering the superficial layer and what lies beyond it. The paintings on display in this exhibition present the surface for what it is, a dubious facade wrought with hidden layers. The included sculptural work removes the painted “canvas” from the stretcher bars and places it in three-dimensional space. The surface layer becomes a painting in space exploring the nature and fragility of facades. Pushing the limits of materials, each work reveals its infrastructure, conceding how it was made and for what purpose. Attention is paid to how space is inhabited and what occurs when place is infused with history and meaning.

Whether making paintings on stretched silk or creating sculptured spaces, each piece investigates the reliance on surface layers while exploring what is typically hidden; integrating shadow, light and layers into the work.

About the Artist

Lisa Kellner has created and installed room sized installations and two dimensional works throughout the United States since 2006. Her work has been exhibited at the Bellevue Arts Museum (WA), the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (NY), the Brooklyn Arts Council (NY) and the Weatherspoon Museum (NC), among others. In addition, Lisa has worked with galleries including Ascent Contemporary (NY), Project 4 (DC), BravinLee Projects (NY) and JoAnne Artman (LA). Lisa’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Sculpture Magazine, among others. Lisa created site responsive installations at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum (FL), the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (ME), Lehman College Art Gallery (NY) and the Target Gallery at the Torpedo Factory (VA). In 2016, Lisa was awarded the New Media Invitational from the Target Gallery in DC. She was also a Joan Mitchell semi-finalist. Her work was recently included in the exhibition, Materiality: The Matter of Matter at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.

Lisa graduated with a BS from Boston University in 1987. She went back to school first at the Art Students League and then at the School of Visual Arts. For 9 years she was a mural painter in New York city. She completed her studies at Lesley University College of Art and Design in 2008, receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree. Lisa currently lives on a small island off the coast of Maine.
