Emily Lynn Perelman is an emerging Boston-based artist creating a colorful, psychedelic universe. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston University, she is diving into the intersection between mindfulness and the creative process. Many elements of Emily’s work touch on spur of the moment feelings. Themes of joy, exploration, and surrender to the act of artmaking are present in her work. Emily is interested in a variety of mediums including printmaking, cut paper, and digital illustration. Her work can be found on beer cans, skateboards, and in Boston’s public spaces.
Statement
The feeling of wonder is an integral part of how I both make and receive art. I find that interpreting graphic elements into a psychedelic context helps achieve this quality of transcendence and progression. Using tools such as symmetry, and repetition I create a visual language through graphic shapes that the viewer may translate in whichever way they please. In this way, my work has the potential to serve as meditation for the viewer. I intend for viewers to get lost in the connectedness of a piece and discover their own themes to encourage a sense of openness.
Acting on intuition is a major factor in my artistic process. I feel that creative choices are not always understood by conscious reasoning and can only be realized through pure action. My process exists in the intersection between mindfulness and creativity. I sit with my environment and emotions to create ideas that sprout from themselves. These ideas are characterized in my work through pulsating shapes and forms.
My constant exploration of new mediums also invigorates my process. I have explored digital illustration, cut paper, spray paint, and ceramics culminating in my current body of work highlighting printmaking. Each medium inspires the other as a way to follow my work on a storyline and lend openness to my practice. As I continue exploring imagery and ways of making, I hope to learn more about mindfulness and introspection.
