Artist Statement
My most recent series of collages, entitled “Daily Affirmations,” combines personal imagery, such as clouds, grids/nets, leaves, hands, and music symbols, with the repetition of phrases like ‘I Can’ and ‘Now Be Here.’ I often repeat these phrases in my mind, much like in the practice of meditation, to find motivation, focus, and courage. I strive to maintain a sense of playfulness in the work by allowing the letters and other images to become characters themselves, in the way they are drawn and in how they interact with the layered shapes. Additionally, I aim to create a dynamic sense of space, defined by a mysterious pull between the foreground and the background, where imagery may seem like it’s floating, yet somehow also grounded. Ultimately, I hope to encourage the viewer to take more time to look, to wonder, and to be present.
